In the late 19th century, many Texas Ranger badges were handcrafted from Mexican silver coins, particularly Mexican pesos. The star would then be mounted within the coin’s ring to form the distinctive badge. Because of this process, the finished badge frequently retained portions of the original coin’s lettering and design.
