GARGOYLES OF THE WORLD – CHATEAU DE BLAIN
New Release
Château de Blain – 1 AVDP Oz .999 Fine Copper Round | Gargoyles of the World Series
Description:
Discover the eccentric artistry of France’s medieval fortifications with the Château de Blain copper round, the fourth entry in our Gargoyles of the World Series. Nestled in the Loire-Atlantique region, the Château de Blain is home to some of the most whimsical and peculiar gargoyles in Europe.
Struck in .999 fine copper, this 1 oz AVDP round measures 39mm and features a vivid depiction of the château’s infamous tongue-wagging gargoyle, captured in a playful and exaggerated pose. Its bulging eyes, protruding tongue, and expressive hands showcase the unique humor and creativity of medieval stone carvers. The reverse continues the series’ signature design — an ornate gothic window motif framing the Gargoyles of the World title, crowned by a winged guardian.
The Legend:
Built in the 12th century, the Château de Blain has weathered centuries of conflict and restoration. Its gargoyles, however, offer a glimpse into the lighter side of Gothic art. Rather than fearsome protectors, figures like the tongue-wagging gargoyle were often designed to amuse or to mock human follies, adding character and levity to the fortress’s stony defenses.
A delightful collectible for those intrigued by the whimsical and satirical elements of medieval architecture.
